There could be damage if you run a thinner oil then recommended, especially in the hotter months. If the motor calls for 5w-20, I wouldn't put in 0w-20 if I needed more than 1 quart. It would better to put in 10w-20 in a pinch, thicker viscosity oil can handle higher loads/heat but lower your mpg due to more oil pumping effort.
