Robotic devices are already performing many of the routine tasks that are either too dangerous or too repetitive, but people are necessary to make the decisions regarding what work should be done and how to maintain the robotic systems.

It is a matter of degree as far as replacement. Robots already have replaced humans for doing simple mindless repetative tasks on assembly lines, and the voice you talk to on a telephone when contacting services is often a robot generated system primed with frequent responces. However the chances of meeting a "replacement human" made of chips and stainless steel that is self aware are still unrealized.
Writers like Vernor Vinge and Ray Kurzweil have have predicted that there will be a "singularity" at some time in the future when machines will be aware and human/machine crossovers will be common. this is not yet realized.
