While a vehicle engine is running the alternator generates electricity to run the car and operate things like the radio, power windows, seats, doors, wipers, and the spark plugs to ignite the fuel making the car go. The excess electricity recharges the battery which is primarily used to start the car in the first place. Without the alternator your car will only run off the battery which will eventually run down and wear out much quicker and need to be replaced. As the battery is dieing its efficiency degrades affecting your performance until it fully dies then your car will not go.

Why might a battery light come on?

It could either be because your alterneator is going bad, or that your alternator belt is loose. Theres an component in the alternator that sends a signal to the dashboard for the battery status. Most often on reconditioned alternators, this component goes bad but it does not affect the overall performance of the alternator

How do you test an overcharging alternator?

To test an overcharging alternator, first, use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running; it should typically read between 13.7 to 14.7 volts. If the voltage exceeds 14.7 volts, the alternator may be overcharging. Additionally, inspect the voltage regulator, as it controls the output of the alternator; a faulty regulator can cause overcharging. Finally, check for any loose connections or damaged wiring that could affect the alternator's performance.

Do bad spark plugs have to do with charging the alternator?

Spark Plugs do not affect your alternator. As long as your engine is running then it should be charging unless your alternator is bad

How do you test altanator on a 1985 dodge truck?

To test the alternator on a 1985 Dodge truck, first ensure the battery is fully charged. Start the engine and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery terminals; it should read between 13.5 to 14.5 volts if the alternator is functioning properly. Additionally, you can check the alternator's output by disconnecting the positive battery cable while the engine is running; if the engine stalls, the alternator is likely faulty. Lastly, inspect the alternator belt for any signs of wear or looseness, as this can affect performance.
