If no wastes have gone into the tank, then the bio filter will not be alive, and the cycle will not have taken place.

How NH3 content in the tropical fish aquarium may be controlled?

The only way to control deadly poisonous Ammonia and Nitrite is to have a properly cycled filter. The naturally occurring bacteria in the 'cycled' filter media, converts the ammonia firstly into nitrIte and then converts the nitrIte into relatively harmless nitrAte. Regular water changes prevent the nitrAte from building up to dangerous levels.

How often do you change bio rings in fish tank filter?

Unless they are so badly clogged up with debris and are stopping the water flow, you should leave them alone. If they are clogged you can clean them, you never replace them with new ones unless they are smashed or decomposing. It is OK to take them out and give them a gentle rinse in warm (not hot) water (NO SOAPS or DETERGENTS) but be carefull not to remove all of the bacteria that are on them. Those Bacteria are the things that people are refering to when they say a "cycled filter" the term "cycled" means the filter has the specialised bacteria that actually do all the major work the filter does ie changing (deadly poisonous) Ammonia into (poisonous) Nitrite and then changing the nitrite into (harmless) Nitrate.

How do you filter a fish tank?

That depends on the kind of filter you have. The best filter you can get is a power filter with compartments for different filter media. With one of these you can easily clean out one media at a time thus keeping the cycled bacteria in there. The worst filter of the lot which IMO should never be used, is an undergravel filter because it can not be serviced or cleaned at all. A filter should only be cleaned when the water flow is badly reduced. Only replace some of the media and only rinse loose rubbish off what you keep. The reason for this is to preserve the good Ammonia and Nitrite removing bacteria that have formed in the filter.

What do you do if the fish filter light is going off but the filters are clean?

You should never clean all the filter media at the same time because you don't want to loose the cycled bacteria. It will not do any harm to clean some of the filter media out gently and maybe increase the water flow which may turn off the warning light.

What is a Biological Aerated Filter?

Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) is a fixed-film system in which a biofilm-support medium is submerged in wastewater to provide biological treatment.

Your gold fish is active during the time of giving food and when filter is on it lays at top of water looking downwardswhy?

For a filter to work properly it MUST be on permanently. Turning it on and off will eventually poison your water and kill your fish. The way a filter works is the media/foam/noodles/wool? collects a specific aerobic bacteria which nature forms over time. Once these bacteria are there and doing their job, the filter is "cycled". These bacteria convert the poisonous ammonia that all fish make (by breathing and pooing in their water) into harmless Nitrate, thereby keeping the water liveable. The basic rules for fishkeeping are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every fish tank needs at least a 50% water change every week.

How do betta fish eliminate waste?

In almost exactly the same way that you or I do. The only difference is that like birds they only have one hole to pass it through. That is the reason why regular water changes and a fully cycled biological filter are needed to keep fish healthy.

If you got a new filter for your fish tank do you take the old one out right away or not?

The old filter media is where the good aerobic bacteria that do all the essential water cleaning work are living. You can either put some of the old media into the new filter to "cycle" it quickly, or you can let the new filter run for a few weeks in conjunction with the old one until the new one is cycled.

What is best position for fluval 2 plus filter in aquarium?

I would place the filter in a back corner facing the outlet water stream along the back. This should create a small current in the tank. Please remember that once the filter is cycled and it needs cleaning, only rinse one of the filter pads. Then next time, do the other pad and so on alternating them. That way you will not loose all your good bacteria.

When do i replace my bio-max media for my fluval fish tank filter?

I would suspect that their lifetime would be many years. The media rings should only be replaced if they are decomposing or are totally blocked and have lost all their ability to house the bacteria that forms as and where they are supposed to. The normal thing to do is to wash about 3/4ths of them well and then only rinse the other 1/4 before putting them back to work in the filter thereby keeping the cycled bacteria alive and working.

What do yellow tube sponge eat?

They eat bacteria, plankton and detritus. When they take in water... they filter these things out, and can filter even the smallest bacteria.
