The Subtle Knife movie was pencilled in for release in late 2009, but has now been put on hold indefinitely due to low box office results in the US and the recession.
Prior to the release of the The Golden Compass on December 7, 2007, New Line said that an adaptation of The Subtle Knife would go into production only if the first film was a success. The Golden Compass did well world wide, however it flopped in the US making the making of the film The Subtle Knife unclear. There will not be a Subtle Knife film, there would be no reason to making a sequel to a bad film.

On Monday May 23, 2011 in the New York Times, it says that the Sequel to 'The Golden Compass', the Subtle Knife is in development. I'm not good on searching the web, but my search came up better than Wikipedia in which IS NOT A CREDITIABLE SOURCE. Ask any high school or college English teacher! Anyway, New York Times on the other hand is CREDITABLE. If you do not believe me here is the link:http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/428054/The-Subtle-Knife/overview
It isn't certain as of yet whether there will be a Subtle Knife movie because The Golden Compass movie was not viewed as successful throughout the U.S. but it was more successful worldwide then expected so hopes are high for The Subtle Knife to be made into a movie. According to the director Chris Weitz for future films he will "protect their integrity" and they will be "much less compromising", which implies that the movie will not be down-played to make it less anti-Christian. Though I'm sure quite a few people and churches will protest the movie because of it's anti-Christian views.
