It doesn't make any difference whether the car was secure or not - theft is THEFT ! What right did he have to take something that didn't belong to him ?
His previous record will be a matter for the court to scrutinise - he has previous convictions - therefore can't use the '...its my first offence...' defence can he !
Additionally - he's 18 - therefore will be sentenced as an adult.
