I don't think so. Replacing the timing belt is regularly scheduled maintenance. You can find out how often it should be replaced in the owners manual next to changing the oil, air filter, spark plugs, etc... It's replaced about every 50,000 miles or so depending on the car. A ticking noise can come from lots of things - low on oil, etc...
If your vehicle has a timing belt and not a chain, you need to replace it immediately. My distributor made the same ticking noise and it turned out to be the timing belt had a frayed piece on it and this piece was the source of the noise. Before I could figure it out, the belt broke and left me stranded on the roadside.
more than likely the tensioner
It sounds like your timing belt hydraulic tensioner arm is bad, they are very expensive.
When a timing belt is going bad it can make a high-pitched screeching sound. It can sound like a high-pitch whirring noise. Not all timing belts make a noise when they are worn or going bad.
ticking sound in engine is usually not caused by a timing belt ticking is usually caused by worn cam shaft or clifters most cars now have hydraulic lifters. if oil is low it will cause ticking. if a lifter is worn it will cause ticking these should have been ckecked for wear when replacing timing belt
Could be timing belt tensioner.
SEAT BELT
im a ase cert tech. your 2.7 has a timing chain not a belt with the chain you will sometimes here a ticking noise coming from the eng on a belt yes they can snap in a instant no warning at all. this is why you should replace the timing belts every 60k to 90k miles.
The most likely cause of a ticking sound in a motor is a bad timing belt. A valve out of time can also cause a ticking sound.
A Saturn 3.0 timing belt noise can indicate that the belt is becoming worn down. It can also indicate a bad gear.
possible loose timing belt hitting housing
With the Dawoo Nubira if you ear a ticking noise check immediately for a bad timing belt!!! The service intervals for those are 5 years or 60,000 miles. But they are also susceptible to dry rot. If that belt goes you could be calling the junk yard to come get your car... The Dawoo Nubria has what is called an "interference" engine. Which means that if the belt fails completely the valves will be hanging open when the piston comes to the top of the cylinder bending valves in the head and destroying the head. A timing belt cost about $250 USD to replace in a shop. If it fails it will cost you thousands of dollars to repair. That being said,.. there are other things that can cause a ticking sound. Bad gas, worn or out of adjustment valves, engine timing, ect. But none of those things bear the consequences of the worn out timing belt. So if your belt is out of maintenance parameters CHANGE THAT BELT!!! Mine takes me about 2 hours to change myself in my driveway. I change mine at 50K, and the part only cost me $50 USD.
