The role of a pilot in a harbor is simple - to be an expert on the port they serve and to bring in vessels ro minimize the chance of damage to property. The pilot generally is brought out to meet the approaching vessel several miles outside of the breakwater. The approaching vessel will open up a door to let the pilot on and he or she is then escorted to the Bridge. This person will either advise the Captain and/or take the helm of the vessel and bring it safely into and out of port.
A pilot boards a ship to sail/steer the ship into or out of a specific port.

A pilot
A pilot is someone with the specialist training and qualifications to manoeuvre a craft. This includes, aircraft, hovercraft and ships. In shipping, a Pilot is employed locally, to assist the ships captain in negotiating the confined waters of a port. He has local knowledge of a port and in most cases, vessels over a certain size, have to employ a pilot before entering port. Everywhere apart from the Panama canal, the pilot is there for assistance only and does not have full command of the ship. That remains the responsibility of the officer of the watch and the captain.
