What became of the aristocrats when kings no longer ruled greek city states?
Well, depending on the individual city states, a couple different things could have happened. In some city states, the aristocrats themselves took power, and formed oligarchies, which are forms of government in which small groups of upperclassmen control the city state. Sometimes a tyrant would take over after a king, and the aristocrats would either stay aristocrats and advisors to the king, or be pushed down to lower class citizens as time went on to be replaced by other advisors the tyrant favored better. In Athens, the aristocrats would remain wealthy citizens when the democracy began (as a rule), but they would no longer rely solely on politics to provide for them.
Asked in Europe
What does modern time mean?
It varies. Technically speaking history is divided into ancient, medieval (or middle) and modern. Modern in that sense would be any point past the 16th century. However sometimes we use it to refer to 'the present generation', and sometimes 'to this decade'. To complicate matters even more we can speak as the point between the start of the Twentieth Century and the 1950s as modern and all points after as Post Modern time.

What was the social structure of Maryland like in the 1600's?
Lord Calvert sought to create a safe haven for Catholics, and several Catholic country aristocrats took him up on the offer. Maryland was primarily settled by a mix of Catholic gentlemen, artisans, indentured servants and farmers. By employing the "headright system," a hierarchy of aristocrats were established in the colony's beginnings. Artisans would have been right below the aristocrats, and farmers would be next. At the very bottom of the hierarchy chart would be the indentured servants and slaves.
