That's not actually an either/or question. One of them is always wrong, the other one might be right or it might not.
"me and my friend" is always wrong.
"My friend and I went to the beach", but "She gave my friend and me cookies."
Always mention yourself last, and decide whether to use I or me based on which you would use if you were only talking about yourself.
