Most bagels are made with enriched flour which is basically the equivalent of eating sugar. The human body begins turning enriched flour into sugar as soon as it comes into contact with saliva. The process of producing enriched flour removes the dietary fiber which has great dietary benefits. Eating any food made with enriched flour (e.g. white bread, English muffins, donuts) rather than whole grains is like eating "empty calories." The body converts this to sugar which can then be stored as fat. It is important to check the ingredients when purchasing any bread product such as bagels to ensure they are made from 100% whole grains NOT flour.

It is rare to find whole grain bagels in traditional grocery stores because most Americans prefer the flavor of flour bagels. If you cannot find whole grain bagels at your local grocer, search for a local health food store such as Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. They are much more likely to carry healthy alternatives.

Yes, bagels are healthy. Choose a whole-wheat bagel over a plain bagel to increase your morning fiber intake. Bagels offer several beneficial nutrients. The primary benefit of eating grains is fiber, a nutrient that plays a role in healthy digestion and cholesterol control. Bagels also contain Vitamin B and carbohydrates, both of which increase energy levels. Whole grains are an important addition to a healthy meal plan because they bulk up in your stomach, keeping you feeling full and preventing hunger between meals. Bagels also offer iron for healthy blood flow and folate, which helps prevent neural tube birth defects. The bagels you find in restaurants are not always a healthy choice. If you buy bagels at a bagel shop, reading the nutrition information before ordering allows you to make a healthier decision. A plain bagel at Dunkin Donuts contains 320 calories and 2.5 g of fat without any cream cheese added. Eating one of these regularly means consuming too many calories in the morning. This may lead to weight gain if you don't balance your calorie intake for the rest of the day.

Bagels are healthy as a dense bread, but when overloaded with butter or cream cheese can quickly become fattening. As with any food, eat within moderation.

The "everything" doesn't affect the general unhealthiness of the bagel. Bagels aren't good for you, seeing how they are bread.
