Sometimes dogs show pain by whining, or limping.
Dogs also show pain in their sleep. Dogs do not want to show any signs of weakness. So most of the time your dog has something wrong with him or her, you will see it in their sleep. They will whine or show any sign of pain.

∙ 14y agoThat is one reason why they would howl. Sometimes they howl for recreation. There are other reasons too. For example they are related to wolves, or they are scared of something

∙ 12y agoThe dog that is howling for it not to die or is telling it's story but it depends on if the pitch of the howl if it is low it is happy if ot is high it is sad upset or worried

Because they are trying to call out to their peers to probably say that they love them and their last thoughts. :^) my guesstimate

Why would a dog howl for no reason?
There are lots of different reasons. Some because they are hungry or have infections. And others because they think they hear something or maybe they are lonely or something. We have a poodle and when we make howling noises at her she does it back and if we interrupt her while she is howling, She does it even louder and she does it longer. And we also have a beagle that we go off of the road a couple of days ago and he howls an awful lot and I think the reason he howls is because it is his nature to howl. All he does is howl and sleep so maybe it's because he was just born to howl.
Does howling from your schnauzer mean she is happy?
Our miniature schnauzer used to raise his head, purse his lips and gently howl like a wolf. By observation, he seemed to do this whenever his was being held at a time when he wanted to be put down on the floor. He would stop when you put him down. Our other schnauzer does not do this - - he communicates that he wants to be put down by struggling and biting. This is slightly less endearing but more usual behavior. Our howling schnauzer was later found to have ear infections and a neurological disease. We don't know if this contributed to the howling. Howling in dogs is a throwback to wolf behavior. All domestic dogs are descended from wolves. Wolves howl for social reasons related to cohesiveness of the packs in which they live. Dogs consider their human families to be their pack. Many dogs will howl when exposed to cacophonous noise such as a human signing off-key. This is an ingenious form of "noise cancelling" that a dog does in order to avoid what appears to be physical pain caused by the annoying noise. Because this may be a sign that the dog is suffering pain, pet owners are not supposed to encourage dogs to howl by signing or playing music to them.

What is good to give a dog for menstrual pain?
Nothing - human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Tylenol, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, aspirin, acetominophen, ibuprofen and other such drugs are extremely toxic to dogs. Also, dogs don't have menstrual cycles and generally don't experience any pain or discomfort when they come into heat. They may bark or howl, but this is generally believed to be a method to notify males in the area that they are fertile and receptive, not an indication of pain.
