Lying on an air mattress
A given patient would create a particular pattern of wear or lumpiness in a particular mattress. A different patient moved to that mattress would not fit into the same pattern, hence, the new patient would not experience pressure on the same locations as he or she did lying on the previous mattress.
I would personnaly say memory foam is the best (foam) as it is soft, comfortable and takes the shape of your body once you have been lying on it.
Self inflating camping mattresses are filled with open cell foam. Open cell means the air in the bubbles is not permanently trapped but can be pushed in and out of the bubbles. This foam is made from a flexible and durable plastic with a strong "memory" so that it tries to return to the same shape after pressure is removed. When the mattresses air vents are opened on a deflated mattress, the pressure of the foam trying to revert to its expanded shape pulls air in to the mattress. The vents are then closed and the trapped air inside the mattress provides support for people lying on the mattress.

gravity
A mattress is designed to be flexible, so that when you lie on it, it will give under your weight. This makes it more comfortable. If you compare the feeling of lying on a concrete floor, which does not indent, you will notice that the mattress is more comfortable.
There could be many factors involved, but a couple come to mind. It could be that the mattress has dust mites and you have an allergy to them and their feces. A good vacuuming of the mattress could help, clean bed sheets or lastly a new mattress might do the trick. Another factor could be within your own body, that your nose gets stuffy because you are in a lying down position. Does your nose get stuffy when you are lying down in about the same posture but not in bed? If you only get stuffy when lying in bed, deal with the bedding or the mattress. If you get stuffy when just lying down, then there is something going on with your own body.
More lbs. per square inch standing up than lying down.
if a man is lying to you pressure him into telling you the truth. Talk yo me when you get this.
If you are on a spring mattress, it could be that it is just a sore in your hip from the spring in the mattress. It could also mean you need a new mattress, if its soft for example try getting one that's a bit firmer.
