A Ninja is fast because its weapons and clothing are light weight that is also why they are so quiet. Another reason is because Ninjas were originally farmers and farmers are very strong in the arms and legs so the Ninjas were fast and they had to run from the Samurai which were the soldiers of Japan because they were abusive so the Ninjas were practically training all their life to become quick and trust me I would know.

What is a straight edged katana called?
Perhaps you are thinking of the straight shorter blade that ninjas used against the samurai katana? That is the ninjaken, or ninja sword, obviously a technical term in japenese :P. The ninja would have the same length sheaths as the traditional katana, that way with the shorter blade they could draw it fractionally faster, and thusly surprise and kill the unsuspecting samurai.

The Ninja would avoid the samurai and hide with in the shadows. but if the ninja was suddenly caught by a samurai patrolling the castle, to the ninja they feel as if they already failed the mission but in the point of view of the samurai they would be in fear since they heared fake stories, rumors of how ninjas are unkillable demons. In conclusion the Ninja only fought the samurai because they were caught in a mission or they had to defend themselves or someone they charished

It is impossible to follow the old ways of the samurai. Samurai means to serve. You would serve the emperor or the shogun or daiymo, depending when in time you were living. Samurai followed bushido, or way of the warrior, devoting to life and death everything to follow a good path through service. The closet to this in a modern day way would be a Buddhist, serving in the army during the a time of war. Samurai were a class of person in Japan, when the samurai class was disbanded, so was its way of life.
