It is likely that if nuclear weapons did not exist, the US and the USSR would have gone to war in the 1950's, and the question of the divided city of Berlin would have been resolved by war, rather than building a wall.

The strategy of nuclear weapons preventing others from using them against the US is called the Deterrent Strategy.

There are no different " Types " of weapons. It is what occurs inside of the bomb. nuclear fusion is when 2 nuclear particles join. Nuclear fission is when 2 nuclear particles split. Particle fusion is when 2 helium particles join. Say each particle weighs 1 gram. If 2 collided, then you would think that the mass would be 2. Well, there is a release of energy which is equivalent to a nuclear bomb going off. This occurs millions of times in the sun.

Why did the cold war result in an arms race?
Because there was no true defense against nuclear weapons. Once both sides had nuclear weapons, the only way to "protect" themselves from the other side was to have so many more nuclear weapons that even if their enemies used all of their nuclear weapons, there would still be nuclear weapons to shoot back with. That way, nobody would use nuclear weapons, because they could never actually "win" that way. This thought process was referred to as Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD.
