yes it can and if you have aluminim heads with a cast iron block you need to put new bolts in as well

The lower intake gaskets have most likely failed, and you are very low on coolant or there is air in the cooling system.

Sometimes, when head gaskets go bad, the coolant will be burnt off out of the exhaust system. That may not be noticeable at all.

it is possible for heat from combustion to cause an engine to overheat quickly depending on where the gasket is blown, but i would look for a lack of coolant circulation first. if your coolant is not getting out of the motor and into the radiator it will overheat very quickly.
