Sputnik was a satellite designed by the USSR and launched on October 4, 1957. Orbiting the earth every 96 minutes, therefore traveling at about 17,500 miles an hour, it emitted a faint radio signal that could be heard around the world.
The launch of Sputnik began the Space Race between the USSR and the United States that ended with the Apollo 11 lunar landing by NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins on July 20, 1969.
