What is the importance of transgenic organisms?

A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques, generally known as recombinant DNA technology, use DNA molecules from different sources, which are combined into one molecule to create a new set of genes. This DNA is then transferred into an organism, giving it modified or novel genes. Transgenic organisms, a subset of GMOs, are organisms which have inserted DNA that originated in a different species

What is the greatest threat to food safety?

There isn't really one major dominating threat to food safety but several. One of them is contamination, also one of the most publicized threats to food safety, simply when a food source comes in contact with another contaminated object that disease will spread; this is most commonly seen with the bacteria E. coli. Another is the use of pesticides and insecticides in agriculture. The widespread use of these chemicals is leading to the evolution of drug resistant insects and bacteria that could potentially wipe out crops leading to famine. Also genetic engineering is also a threat to the safety of our food; food allergies that were unseen can pose a major health issue, also the mixing of GMOs (genetically modified organisms) not deemed safe for human consumption with the rest of our food. In the mid-2000's a GMO corn product that was deemed unsafe for humans but safe for cattle was inadvertently entered into our food supplies and products. This mixing cause major allergic reactions and an FDA study at the time showed it to be in 70% of all corn containing products. Several years after the incident the GMO corn was still found in food products by the FDA, pointing a major problem preventing the combination of unsafe GMOs and the removal and isolation of those GMOs after they have entered into our foods.

What is glo gene?

Usually used in GMOs (genetically modified organism) as 'markers' when a plant is genetically engineered to see if it has taken up the new gene. GLO-gene becomes visible in the organism when put under ultraviolet light.

What are the requirements for labeling GM foods in the US?

in the United States GMO foods are not labeled. Some foods that do not contain GMOs are voluntarily labeled, often with the Non GMO Project label. Due to cross contamination, even foods with the Non GMO Project label may not be totally free of GMOs. Foods in the UK that contain GMOs are labeled.

What is the role of religion in banning GMO?

Religion doesn't appear to have a role in the GMO controversy. The issues appear to be possible improprieties in regulation of crops and foods containing GMOs, safety issues that have not been addressed to the satisfaction of those who oppose GMOs, and people wanting GMO foods labeled so they can choose whether or not to buy and consume them. The labeling issue has been the most publicized, and the issue there is not banning GMOs, but people wanting the right to know what the foods they consume are made from.

Should genetically modified organisms require labels?

A large percentage of consumers believe GMO foods should be labeled. Most are not aware that some pharmaceutical medicines are produced from GMOs or that cross-pollination has resulted in organic and non-GMO foods often having a small percentage of GMOs.

What is the most common genetically modified food?

Assuming that you mean the first crop with non-natural genetic material inserted artificially by humans, the first genetically modified crop was tobacco, with the first plants having been created in 1982.

Why is the food and agriculture industry largely posed to labeling GMOs cloned foods?

We can only guess at what their motives are, but considering that it is estimated that 70% of the processed foods in grocery stores contain GMOs and the reaction that Europe had to GMO foods, it is reasonable to believe that they oppose labeling because they fear that labeling GMOs would severely hurt their sales.

GMOs are guaranteed not to be found in which type of food?

There are no foods that contain corn, soy, canola, papayas, or any foods that are known to have been genetically modified that can be guaranteed NOT to contain any GMOs, not even foods labeled "100% organic" or foods on the Non-GMO Project's list of non-GMO foods. This is due to GMO varieties cross-pollinating with organically grown crops, which has resulted in the possibility, if not probability of organically grown foods having small amounts of GMOs in them. The foods on the Non-GMO Project list can actually contain up to 0.9% GMOs (as stated on the Non-GMO Project's website).

Would animal products that may have consumed GMOs be required to have a label?

No, they would not be required to be labeled. No foods that contain GMOs are required to be labeled as such.

Would you eat foods made from genetically modified crops?

If you eat processed foods, you are assured of eating at least some foods that contain GMOs. Some people have stopped eating processed foods because of that. Regardless of personal choice, though, even foods labeled 100% organic may contain small amounts of GMOs due to cross contamination of organically grown crops during growth, so it may not be a choice of whether to eat GMO foods, but how to reduce the amount of GMOs you are possibly eating. To answer your question directly, I no longer eat corn, soy, canola, or foods that can be identified as containing any ingredients made from them. So, given the choice I would not eat foods made from GMO crops.

Do the Consumer Protection Laws protect consumers from being forced to accept GMOs?

No, they do not. There are no laws that protect consumers if they do not want to eat GMOs. The consumers' only choice if they wish to avoid eating GMOs is to stop eating lots of foods that may contain GMOs.

Does Aldi brand foods have GMOs?

Most foods in Aldi's are likely to contain GMOs. In the United States, GMO foods are not labeled, but any food that contains corn, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS, which is made from corn), soy, and some other ingredients, is almost sure to have GMOs unless it is labeled "100% organic" (and even then it may not be completely free of GMOs).

Are organic foods geneticly modified?

Organically grown foods are not (trans)genetically modified, meaning they are not what is considered GMOs.

How much of the food on the market is cloned food?

The only people who would have even a semi-accurate account of the amount of cloned food that is being sold today are the companies who are putting it there and government agencies who are allowing them to do it. Cloned food is a lot like genfoods (foods containing ingredients from genetically modified plants or animals). By the time the word about GMOs in the foods we buy at the supermarkets got out to the masses, GMOs were ingredients in almost all processed foods. It will be the same for cloned foods unless enough people speak out against it NOW.
