The French contributed somewhat to the over throwing of the British in the colonies. Their reason was that if England was defeated they would be more vulnerable for an attack which never came. Something similar happened during the American Civil War when England aided the south so the war would continue longer and weaken both sides so the winner would be vulnerable for an attack which, again, didn't happen.

Basically, Finland just didn't want to be taken over. Finland's attacks against Russia were primarily out of defence. Russia instigated the attacks. Their main motive in attacking Finland at the beginning of the war was because holding Finland would give them a strategical advantage in fighting Germany. Finland's involvement in WW2 can be summarized by three periods: 1) Russia's initially invading of Finland. Finland's 250,000 soldiers caused the 1,000,000 invading Russians to retreat from their initial invasion and regroup in Russia. 2) Finland allowing Germany into the country to battle Russia. 3) Finland driving out Germany after they refused to leave the country. The moral of the story is, don't mess with Finland.
