It had supporters aplenty and detractors in abundance. In many ways it is a war that should never have been entertained on moral grounds. Many of its critics assert that the war was the case of a bully taking on a smaller and weaker opponent.

No. It was a conflict for the benefit of rich men and slave owners. The common man wouldn't (and in fact didn't) benefit from it. At the end 30,000 people died because of it and the war established the enmity between the south and the north that ended in the American Civil War, with another 625,000 American people dead and 415,000 mutilated or wounded.

Right now it is very unlikely, but Manifest Destiny and slave ownership were very popular among southern Americans during that time period; remember that the Mexican-American War was heavily supported by militiamen (+59,000), most of which came from southern, pro-slave states. In fact, if these militiamen had not joined the war, Mexico would have had a very good chance of winning. This conflict was fought by 91,000 Americans including those 59,000 militiamen and 32,000 professional soldiers against 40,000 Mexicans).

This was of course, a very destructive way of thinking that led to the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) only thirteen years later.
