You click on sync in media player add songs but it is requesting you to add device even though the ipod is hooked up The ipod is in My Computer. Do I need to add it to Windows Media player somwhere.?

Ipods are designed to work with iTunes and only itunes. Windows Media Player, being a Microsoft product is not an official client for synching ipods. You will need to install itunes or find some alternative program for updating your iPod.
There is a WMP (Windows Media Player) plugin for synching ipods from WMP... although its not free. The link is below.
In the past i have had good luck synching ipods with winamp, which is free. Also linked below.
