Ipods are designed to work with iTunes and only itunes. Windows Media Player, being a Microsoft product is not an official client for synching ipods. You will need to install itunes or find some alternative program for updating your iPod.
There is a WMP (Windows Media Player) plugin for synching ipods from WMP... although its not free. The link is below.
In the past i have had good luck synching ipods with winamp, which is free. Also linked below.

There shouldn't be any problems with the device. Windows 7 is pretty good at detecting and installing older devices.
