If you right click on the task bar, there should be an option to 'show the desktop'.
By default all the icons are are displayed on desktop but you can hide them. You can use desktop context menu to hide or show, right click on desktop, go to 'view' options and uncheck 'show desktop options'. To make them visible again simply check the 'show desktop options'. You can also use .reg file for showing or hiding. Show: 'Show_Desktop_Icons.reg Hide: 'Hide_Desktop_Icons.reg'

Assuming you mean the "Show Desktop" button, you right click the start back and click "Properties" then check "Show Quick Launch".
Did you try right clicking on your desktop and choosing "arrange icons with" and then choosing "show desktop icons"
Right click on desktop go to 'view' option and there you will see 'show desktop icons', select that and icons should appear.

The shortcut key to show the desktop on Windows is Windows key + D. Pressing this combination minimizes all open windows and reveals the desktop. Pressing it again restores the windows to their previous state.
Right click the desktop, hold the cursor on the VIEW option an uncheck "show desktop icons" then to the samething again and re-check the "show desktop icons" option, as far as what causes it i dont know but this seems to work
