No, you cannot patent (or copyright) an idea. You must protect is as a "trade secret" until you have written the book, at which point you will have copyright protection for the book, but still no legal protection for the basic "idea". You may record your "idea" in a concrete outline form, and have it witnessed and notarized as a form of proof of your ownership as of a particular date, in case the question arises later.
