You have to push the button to simulate a closed door before your electronic lock will work any ideas about what is wrong?

Nothing is wrong. This is a safety feature used on modern vehicles. All doors must be closed before atuomatic locks initiate. It's intended to protect you from locking your keys in the car, or your children accidently locking you out.
