How can you clean the catalytic converter when it is clogged?

It can't be cleaned, just replaced and recycled.

State the purpose of the exhaust system?

To route harmful gases to the rear of the car after the catalytic converter has cleaned up the exhaust as much as possible. Also the muffler is used to quite the exhaust.

Where do you start looking for the problem if an 89 Accord with 190 thousand miles emits NO compounds at double what will pass?

1) clogged EGR ports--might have to be cleaned 2) check engine timing is in spec 3) make sure car is not overheating 4) catalytic converter 1) clogged EGR ports--might have to be cleaned 2) check engine timing is in spec 3) make sure car is not overheating 4) catalytic converter

Why will a lean condition cause a catalytic converter to turn red?

The catalytic converter usually has an Oxygen Sensor before and after the converter. The hot exhaust gases of the exhaust heat up a catalystic and the voltage is proportional to Oxygen. By measuring before and after the catalytic converter, you have a sense if the Catalytic converter is working correctly in cleaning up the exhaust. The exhast to be cleaned up correctly requires the PCM to sometimes run Lean fuel mixture, to clean up NOx, and sometimes Rich mixture to clean up HC (Hydrocarbons). So PCM cycles the fuel mixture between rich and lean many times in the process of driving, so that to get optimal efficiency of the catalytic converter. However, if you have a vacuum leak, your engine will run LEAN and the PCM will compensate and force it to run rich instead. After a while, by running rich too much, you are throwing unburned fuel into the exhaust pipe, causing Catalytic converter to become Red hot and causing it to fail. So in short, running Rich, not lean, can cause converter failure.

Why does my 1992 g20 - act sluggish wants to go but hesitates I have changed fuel filterpump has good presurefixed air hoses and a new catalytic converter I have also had the injectors cleaned?

check timing plugged muffler

Can a catalytic convertor be cleaned?

Yes/No- When the catalytic converter is not performing correctly it is usually due to excess buildup that is clogging the small internal passages in the converter these small passages can not be serviced, cleaned ect. and the converter must be replaced and depending on the type of vehicle these converters can cost as high as $450 dollars.. However there is a temporary fix that can be done until the converter can be properly replaced....simply cut the exhaust pipe just behind the welds on the inlet/outlet tubes of the converter and remove the converter then using 2 exhaust pipe couplings,4 clamps and a small section of exhuast pipe and replace the missing section...This may cause the check engine light to remain on while driving, but the vehicle will be operational, this fix should only temporary as the vehicle will not pass emmission testing...

What does a oxygen sensor do?

1980 is when they started putting oxygen sensors in cars and back then they only put one in the car. 1996 is when the OBD II system came out and they started putting more sensors in the cars sometimes up to 4. There is usually one oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold itself which measures the amount of unburned oxygen. Then there is one after the catalytic converter which measures the oxygen level after its cleaned by the catalytic converter.

I have 98 Firebird 3800 V6 and have replaced the plugs and wires as well as the coil packs fuel filter cleaned the injectors but it still lacks power runs ruff. What am I missing?

Do a compression test Check for plugged catalytic converter

How can you tell if the catalytic converter is bad on a 2002 Ford F-350 5.4 engine the truck is bucking?

Normally when a catalytic converter goes bad, it fills up with junk. It simply slows down the vehicle. You have the gas pedal to the floor and you are going a lot slower than you should be going. It does not make the vehicle buck. How long has it been since you cleaned out the fuel system? How is your electrical system? How are your plugs? Have they been checked in 8 years?

Can catalytic converters be cleaned?

No hollowing them out or ramming a steel rod through it is not recommended. it may over heat and catch on fire or do permanent damage to your cars engine and or emissions system. If your money is tight buy an aftermarket or universal one, or some states allow you to put in a "test tube" which by passes the catalytic converter. They are expensve because the contain Platinum

How do you clean the EGR port on a 1999 Honda Odyssey?

I had a similar trouble on a 2000 Odyssey. I replaced the egr myself, but the trouble returned. I then had Firestone check it and they did the same thing and cleaned the port. However the check engine light and the same trouble code kept coming back. I took it to the Honda dealer next and the they replaced the egr valve (again) and the catalytic converter (there was a code for the catalytic converter also.) It was all done under waranty with no charge, I had 78K miles and the waranty expired at 80K miles. I am now at 114k miles and have not had that problem again. Good luck.

What could cause a 1999 Toyota Camry check engine light to come on after replacing all the sensors and driving it for about forty miles?

what sensors have you replaced?? i am assuming the oxygen sensors. i need a code number to tell you what is wrong. if its a p0420 its probabily the catalytic converter. mabye a p0141-mass air flow needs to be cleaned
