Now. It may be embarrassing or scary but if you never tell him, he'll never know. And I hate to go all weird while answering your question, but you never know when he may move or go away forever (if you get what I'm saying), so don't get nervous and just tell him. Maybe he feels the same way about you. Plus you said you two dated before, so it's not like he absolutely hates you or anything. So just go for it
