You can call him whatever you want, free speech, right? Unless you are in the military, there is no law or code of rules and standards you must follow when addressing the president.

Having said that, although there is no mandate to do so, the tradition and standard protocol for showing the due respect to the President and the office he holds, is to call him either President Obama or Mr. President. Barack Obama is appropriate in some situations, but not Mr. Obama. He has earned the title and we should respect that enough to use proper etiquette and protocol when we address him. Very close friends and family may have been given his permission to call him Barack, but usually even they do so only in private, adopting the proper protocol in public.

Everyone does not and should not call him Mr. Obama, but too many people do. Respect for the Office of the President and for the person holding that office is required in proper use. Titles are a way to show respect, so he should be called either: President Obama, President Barack Obama, Barack Obama or Mr. President.

But please note that there is one very good exception. The use of "Mr. Obama" has another reason that is in no way disrespectful: it is a journalism custom. The New York Times and other publications will use Mr. as one way to show journalistic respect for an important leader. Normally, people are just referred to by their last name in a news story: they are given their name and title on first mention, and then are just called Smith or Jones or whoever. But since it is the president, the Times and other media will use Mr. to show the president is a special person. You will sometimes see me doing that in my answers, because I was trained in broadcast and print journalism customs.

it seems to be increasingly common now for those in the news media to refer to the president as MR. obama, while simutaneously referring to mitt romney as GOVERNOR romney. i think it's racist, and a sign of the general disrespect the media has shown president obama since his first day in office. if you're going to refer to mitt romney by a job title (which he currently is not a governor of any state), you should also afford the sitting president the same courtesy by referring to him as PRESIDENT obama.

that said, i think it was started as a type of 'copying' british news media, who would often refer to their prime ministers as "mr." so-and-so. but--like everything else in this country--it became politicized and overdone.

Because they either don't know or don't care that the Office of President and the person who holds that office have earned the highest respect. This is traditionally shown to the Office in several ways. One way is by using titles. This shows that respect, as when we call elders Sir and Ma'am. The President should be referred to in good manners and with respect as: President Obama, Mr. President, President Barack Obama or Barack Obama.

Is it proper protocol for the media to call President Obama Mr. Obama and not President Obama?

Using the title of President instead of Mr. is a sign of respect for the office of the Presidency of the United States and should be used when addressing or speaking of the President. At times, however, it would be appropriate to call him "Mr. President". All citizens should honor the office of President and give due respect. You do not have to agree with someone to show them the respect of their position. If someone is the President of the United States and especially if you are a citizen of the United States, then it follows that you should show respect and address him as President, for example: President Obama - not Mr. Obama.
