Thoughts: I think that it is a powerful poem. It speaks of injustice and cruelty, and takes the long view, as we have to do a lot with the frequency we see it in our society. The images of the skeletons in shackles bring to mind the nameless, untraceable innocents that have paid in fear and pain and horror for the crimes of other men... both victims of slavery and victims of other crimes. They are the voiceless and yet ever-present accusers, and eventually justice will be served. I think that is what the poem promises... eventual justice for all the powerless, nameless victims.
