You thought you just sprained your knee so you iced and after a couple of weeks the pain went away the pain is back now why?

Go get at least an xray from the doctor.
You could have done a lot to it, tore your cartilage, your ligiment, meniscus, broke your knee cap, plenty. I had knee pain after I played a game and thought hey after I ice it, it will be good. No, it got worse, and I had to get arthoscopy surgery, they do this simple small incision procedure to clean up and fix and find everything wrong with your knee while in there because some xrays/mri's dont show your problems up. Good luck! Hope your knee feels better soon.
