Your 2000 Chevy astro has very hard steering and the brakes seem hard to stop the car what could be the problem?
check the power steering fluid, also check to see if the belt is on
What is the problem when you can not steer nor brake the car 97 GMC astro its very hard t o steer the steering wheel and hard to brake its very hard when pressing the brake pedal?
For several years of the Chevy astro van had a power brake and power steering system that was linked together. Instead of a brake booster, the power steering pump provides power to the power brake system. Often, if the brake pedal would become hard to push, it is a power steering pump problem. Change the power steering pump and the power steering fluid and your problem may disappear.
Two things: 1. Your power steering pump is quite - this will affect your steering (of course) but will effect the brakes too 2. You lost your main belt that operates all the aulterator, steering, cooling system and brakes (the serpantine belt) - if the belt is still on and tight - its number one (I had both happen1)
1994 Chevy astro allwheel drive van and the brake pedal occassionally locks and you have no brakes but can pump 3 or 4 times to get brakes back sometimes humming associated with brakes coming back?
If you're saying that the brakes lock with the brake pedal UP, it's an ABS problem and it will probably be very expensive. You could check the wheel speed sensors and hope that's the problem. Otherwise, you'll need to have the code read and unfortunately you can't yet buy an ABS code reader. On the other hand, if the brake pedal is going to the floor, check for fluid or an internal master cylinder leak
To change the power steering pump on the 1996 Chevy Astro van, you will first need to gather the correct tools. This job requires a special tool to remove the power steering pulley. You will disconnect the negative battery cable, remove the power steering pump pulley, remove the old pump, and replace it with the new pump by bolting the pump into the system.
What if the power steering and brakes are locked up on your astro van after falling in a ditch what do you need to do?
Astro's power steering and power brakes run off the same hydraulic system. The hydraulic pump was probably damaged when you "fell" into the ditch. A hard turn can cause damage. Both systems go out at the same time. Steering and braking are not impossible without the hydraulics, but extremely difficult. Safest bet would be a tow to the mechanic who will probably replace the pump. $400 - $500.
You should be able to pull off the horn button in the middle. There might be a wire going from the button to a hole in the steering wheel, just push in and rotate to remove it. There should be a clip that you pry off. You can the use a steering wheel remover to pull off the wheel. The 1994 Chevy Astro EXT van has 4 bolts behind the steering wheel/airbag/horn assembly to remove…
