Well is it actually engaging into 4WD? If so, then you do simply have a problem with the lights. However, if you don't notice the transfer case engage, you may have a problem with either the push button system or the transfer case itself.
check the fuse and the park lamp relay

Check the main headlight fuse. Check the start button, it interrupts power to the headlights. If the high beam indicator and the gauge lights are out it could be this switch.

You mean 'service engine soon'. It lights up as a warning that you should have an auto mechanic look at your engine to see if it needs service. It lights up because a sensor detects that something is not working right.
I had a similar experience on my 57 Chevy back in the 60's. 1. CheckFuse Panel fuse under Brake Lights. 2. Check bulbs High Beam filaments. 3. Withrunning lights on tap tail lights to check for wire grounding shorts. 4. Check flasher to see that the lights work. 5. This is what I discovered to be wrong: Look under Brake Pedal for the Brake Relay Switch button. It works in reverse like the button on a refrigerator or vehicle door. When the button is pressed in by the brake pedal it opens the circuit to the High Beam of the brake/running tail lights. If working by hand but not by the brake adjust it. If not working replace it. It is the Brake Lights Relay Switch.
When you turn on the ignition the service indicator lights up, then press the reset button in the instrument until the mileage resets. This takes around 15 secs so be patient!
If a Passat 04 TDI's indicator lights are not working, check the fuse. A blown fuse can cause the lights to stop working.
