If the noise sounds like a banging sound it could be that you have a worn timing chain. Note: 22re's have timing chains not belts. You should have the noise checked-out by an experienced Toyota mechanic.

I can't see an issue in swapping it. i don't see any issues unless smog is a factor but i believe the 22re motor from 1985 to 1995 is the same all the way through those years the motor was built
A resonator on any car is to help the muffler keep the exhaust noise level to a minimun.
Sure.. just pull the wiring harness to run the EFI. the carb motor harness wont run the efi.. yes it will. i did it in my truck
