What are the effects of a spark plug not working?
A spark plug is used to ignite the fuel/air mixture inside the cylinder of an internal combustion engine. If the spark plug isn't working, the cylinder won't fire. In a multi-cylinder engine, this will result in rough running and loss of power. In a small, single cylinder engine, this will result in the inability to start the engine.

What is the proper compression for a Chevy 283 motor?
It should have 150 PSI per cylinder. If it has a reading of 90 LBS. are less on any given cylinder, Then the engine will idle rough at an idle. / engine miss. You can't have anymore then 15 LBS. difference in any one cylinder. 150 LBS per cylinder is a good reading on a fresh are good running engine that's in good shape. You may have only 120,130,140 or 150 LBS. That is your highest reading, And engine will run fine as long as there is no more then a 15 LB. difference in any given cylinder. Hope this answers your question. A 100 or less LBS means the engine is tired / Worn out needs rebuilt.

What does it mean when only 5 out of 6 cylinders fire?
It means that the engine is "missing." With the engine running, pull the injecter wires on each cylinder. If the engine changes pitch or runs worse, go to another cylinder. If there's no change, then you've found the bad cylinder. Check the plug for fowling, the injector for operation, and finally try a compression test on the affected cylinder.

Why are multi cylinder engines preferred to single cylinder engines?
this is rhetorical when you think about it. when you have more cylinders, you have more power, but less fuel efficiency, and vice versa. In this answer its not all completely correct in some cases a multi-cylinder engine can have a better fuel economy compared to a single cylinder engine, it depends on the capacity of the of the cylinder, the size of the valves and how much they allow the fuel and air mixture (in S.I engines A.K.A petrol engines) or air for diesel engines. One reason that i know of for a multi-cylinder engine to be preferred to a single cylinder engine is because it gives less stress to the engine when running it also causes the engine to be more stable. In addition a multi-cylinder engine has less time between power strokes so the engine is more efficient.
