It could be a few things. First off, please check your alternator belt (when the car is off) (the black inwardly grooved belt running to the left of the engine block) is intact and spinning properly when the car is running (not seriously cracked, missing many grooves, or shredded in any way.) This belt is required to spin the iron core inside the alternator to generate electricity that's sent to the battery. Then please check and make sure the terminals are properly and tightly connected to the battery. Most likely... your battery is old (over 3 years) and the lead plates inside have worn. Buy a new battery. Next likely... battery new? Alternator is defective. I suggest getting a rebuild over a "new" part. Cheaper and still effective. The alternators tend to wear easily in these GM cars. The alternator looks like a steel basket with a swirl of copper wires inside. Not the alternator? Shorting or defective wiring. If you're mechanically inclined and willing to buy a few tools, this repair is possible (unless you have a wiring problem.) Buy a Haynes manual and follow the instructions. http://www.haynes.com/products/year/2004/make/Chevrolet/model/Malibu/productID/509
Please don't forget to re-tension the alternator belt properly! Good luck!
