If the gas pedal is sticking on a 1980 Chevy, it is possible that the cable is wearing out. Check for slack in the cable. There could also be dirt on the pedal itself that is causing it to stick.
A 1990 Cutlass Ciera might hesitate and sputter when the gas pedal is depressed because of water in the fuel or because of damaged or dirty fuel injectors. You might also have an issue with the wiring or the distributor.
Clean the throttle body with a spray throttle body cleaner.
Put the car in drive, unbuckle, and floor the gas pedal. The lights will turn on as needed.
If it is sticking down, it may be your floor mat. There was a recall on the 2002 SE-R b/c the tab that was supposed to hold the floor mat in place was faulty and it would slide forward and push down on the gas pedal.
Occasionally the gas pedal will have some resistance when you press it. You could check and lube gas pedal, gas cable, and throttle itself.
The gas pedal is on the right side as you are sitting in the car.
