I really don't know the answer to your dilemma! But let me throw out one possibility: is it at all likely that he is contented in his life with you and feels some seemingly irrational compassion for his Ex that he wants to share? One thing that speaks in his favor is that he wants you to go along. Still let's be clear on one thing: this should be no more than a one-time event. And that event, if you shouldn't care to join him, could be nothing more than a connect to the past - like visiting your hometown - and nothing more.
