the cabinets were not properly prepared prior to the first painting. The paint can be "stripped" off using a commercial paint stripper or your best bet is to sand the paint and cabinets down as this will need to be accomplished anyway for any furute paint to adhere properly
I don't have the answer to your question, but am curious how the cabinets are holding up, were you happy with the finish, what finish of Aura did you use? I've painted some walls with Aura and was blown away by its performance. I want to do my kitchen cabinets, but always thought I'd have to use an oil based product. Thanks!
You will need to rough the varnish up with sandpaper then use a bonding primer.
Use gripper as a primer before painting your cabinets. I made the mistake of putting paint over cabinets with out gripper and the paint easily chipped and would even scratch with as little as a fingernail when opening a door or drawer. The next time I painted cabinets I used gripper and after 5 years the cabinets still look like new.

What kind of paint was used? Water or oil based paint?
Wood veneer can be painted over on kitchen cabinets. The paint should be a latex that is not of acrylic nature. Oil paint will only smear and not dry evenly.

This isn't a quick-and-easy evening job but the results can be dramatic and well worth the effort. I painted our oak cabinets four years ago. It really transformed the kitchen, and they still look great. Details are important: You have to use the right paint and techniques. I found these instructions on a website I trust, and they appear to be very thorough:http://www.diyadvice.com/diy/painting/interior/cabinets/
