Check with your vet. Usually female dogs go through a heat cycle, called estrus, every six months or twice a year. This heat cycle lasts for several days up to three or four weeks.
When a dog has their "period", it is called a heat cycle. Bigger breed dogs, such as a Golden Retriever, usually do not have their first heat cycle under 12 months of age. Though 16 months old is not common, some Goldens can wait until 18 months before having their first one. Here is an article about Golden Retriever's and their heat cycle: http://www.all-about-goldens.com/canine-heat-cycle.html
Heat cycles can start as early as the fourth or fifth month of a kitten's life, but usually start around six months. Heat cycles will continue all her life until you spay her. A cat is usually in heat for a week or two, and will start again every two to three weeks.
Horses are pregnant for 11 months. A "normal" horse gets her first heat cycle at around 3 years of age.
Heat already is heat. No need to convert anything.

I actually was wondering the same thing. I have a dog who is 11 months old and in her first heat. I called the vet because I was worried she may be pregnant when I noticed her nipples were swollen. I called my vet and they said it is normal during heat.
