Your manual 1996 Ford Aspire starts but you can't get it into gear what causes this?

It may be in gear but you have a broken CV joint. Check the boot on the joint to see if it's torn or cut. If it is then jack up the front end and hold the big part of the joint right by the wheel and turn the small shaft if they turn seperatly then the joint is broken and your car will not move.
