For instance an 8 year old would not be competing against a 12 year old. Yes it is. The brace is there to immobilize your neck until it heals. If the the brace is not compatible with swimming, you might consider not swimming until you've healed completely. This would be a good thing to talk to your doctor about, as I would guess you've been asked to reduce excercise until your cervical spine heals.
