In the short term (hours), symptoms are: Dehydration (a lot of peeing and drinking), cramped muscles, red eyes, heart palpations, loss of energy, fever-like sensation, grumpy, dizzy or nauseous.

In the medium term (days, weeks), additional symptoms include: oxidization of tissues (internal burn damage) leading in the short term to increased insulin resistance, decreased insulin production, and damage to kidneys. Excess sugar in urinary tract increases risks of urinary tract infection. Oxidative damage to smallest capillaries and nearby nerves leads to diabetic retinopathy (attack on retinas, sight damage) and neuropathy (attack on peripheral nerves, tingling, numbness).

In the long term (years), these symptoms accumulate to create long-term diabetic damage: Neuropathy becomes permanent numbness of feet and hands. Retinopathy becomes blindness. Increased insulin resistance and decreased insulin production becomes deterioration in Diabetes to permanent insulin-dependence. Constant high sugar in urine leads to kidney damage. Circulatory system and heart are continually under attack and become diseased.

The best way to prevent diabetic deterioration is to minimize the number of hours spent each day with high blood sugar, preferably to zero.
