For those looking to enter the horse world, the first steps can seem a bit intimidating. However, when broken down, equestrian sports are quite easy to understand and take part in. Unfortunately, they do have specific requirements for clothing and equipment in order to ensure the safety of the horse, rider, and everyone else involved. There are several different disciplines of equestrian sports, but the following list should help anyone, no matter they are looking to take one ride or are think of pursuing horses as a hobby, the below items are a requirement for anyone wanting to get on the back of a horse.

Clothing for the Rider:

The clothes that equestrians wear are not worn by them to simply make a style statement. Instead, the clothing worn is to make sure that the rider is comfortable and safe while riding. Depending on the discipline, pants worn range from loose jeans to riding breeches that come in a knee patch, meaning that there will be a suede or leather patch at the knees, or full seat, referring to when leather or suede covers the whole backside and inner thigh of the pant, styles. It is best not to wear tight jeans or jeans with holes in them. Shorts are also not recommended as the rider may get chaffed when riding if bare legs are exposed. If the weather is cold, be sure to wear clothes that allow plenty of movement. The absolutely most important piece of clothing to have when riding is boots with at least 2" heels; this is to prevent the rider's foot from potentially slipping through the stirrup which could be extremely dangerous if the rider was to fall off.

Equipment for the Rider:

Stables that offer school horses or riding lessons will provide all tack for the horse. However, they may not provide equipment for the rider. Again, equipment recommended will depend on the equestrian discipline. However, it is advised that no matter what discipline or type of horse a rider is riding, that an ASTM approved helmet be worn at all times. This type of helmet can be found at most tack stores. It is best not to use a bike helmet as it may not adequately protect the head in case of fall. Other than the correct clothing, riders wont need any other equipment.

How to Find Cheap Equestrian Clothing and Equipment?

As anybody in the world of equestrian sports knows, equipment and clothing are not cheap. There are many stores that would be happy to sell you top of the line tack and clothing but for many this is not an option. It can be especially daunting for those new to the sport as one must buy all sorts of clothing and equipment not only for practice but also for competitions. The following are several ways to find inexpensive equestrian clothing and equipment.Online Sources - Online auction sites as well as online classified ads can be a good source of gently used equipment but you can never be sure of the quality and shipping costs can be steep especially if you’re looking at some larger pieces like horse blankets or saddles.Swap Meets/Barn Sales - Many horse clubs and associations offer swap meets and barn sales to offer people a chance to exchange outgrown clothing or unneeded equipment for different items. These are an invaluable opportunity to get great clothing and equipment at a very reasonable cost.Exchanges - You’re not alone in finding the cost of equestrian equipment high. Association newsletters often contain a classifieds section where you can request a trade for equal value clothing or equipment. This is a great way to get a larger saddle or a pair of dress boots.Fairs, Trade Shows and Conventions - Keep your eye open for county fairs or large horse related conventions and trade shows. These are excellent opportunities to find great deals on new equipment from participating vendors. Especially on larger ticket items like saddles, trade show only specials can be a great way to save money.Purchase with Tack - If buying a new horse or pony consider negotiating the price of the deal to include the tack for the horse in question. This will save you much time and money down the road if you don’t already have sufficient tack to outfit the horse. The world of equestrian sports is richly rewarding but it doesn’t have to be just for the wealthy. Armed with the above knowledge you can find new or gently used clothing and equipment at very reasonable rates.

What should i do if my dad is getting me a horse which has always been my dream but he's getting it for the wrong reasons?

Don't let him get the horse! They require too much attention, money (feed, blacksmith, vet, equipment, shavings, hay (good hay), monthly wormer,....the list is never ending. If you are inexperienced with horses then try leasing one from a boarding farm before buying! Its a good introduction to what time, energy and $$ is required. Not saying that owing a horse is too much trouble - its not - its wonderful but too many people get into horses before they should and the animal ends up suffering. Go lease and learn - then buy!
