Pit bulls have one of the worst reputations and should not be around children. They are bred to bite hard and be mean and aggressive.

Everyone knows about the labrador retriever’s reputation for being good with children. Labs have many positive traits. They are affectionate, loving, loyal, patient, good natured and eager to please. However, they are big dogs and can unintentionally knock down children or get too hyper. Golden retrievers are also good with kids, as they share the same characteristics as Labs. Another good choice is a Boston terrier. They are smart, patient and gentle with kids. Standard poodles are very smart, patient and loyal. Cavalier King Charles spaniels are safe around kids, smart and even-tempered. However, they are rare and expensive.

No matter the dog’s reputation, children and dogs need to be introduced to each other slowly. You should never allow your dog to act as your child’s babysitter. Be sure to watch their interactions at all times. Even the nicest dog can knock over a baby or play too rough and cause serious injury.
