If you're looking at renting a small house or a duplex that is owned privately as opposed to by a company, you may be able to haggle with the landlord regarding your rent. Once you've found someplace that you believe would suit your needs, you should talk to residents of the building or complex. Ask about the landlord, the quality of the upkeep, the safety of the area and the reliability of the utilities, as well as the quality of any public transportation. Finding an affordable place to live shouldn't have to be like pulling teeth. Everyone deserves to live safely and comfortably without having to spend every penny they earn to do so.
