Those who want a career that pays well with job security should consider nursing as an option. Nurses work in all types of health care settings, including hospitals, health departments, long-term care facilities and physicians offices. Unlike other degree programs, a person who is interested in nursing has options that range from one year programs for Licensed Practical Nurses and four year degree programs at colleges and Universities. There are also degrees beyond The Bachelor’s degree.

LPN training

Licensed practical nurse training usually takes about one year at a technical or vocational school. Upon completion of this training, participants earn a certificate or diploma. To become a licensed practical nurse, a state licensing examination is required. In Texas and California, LPNs are known as LVN’s or licensed vocational nurses. LPN’s perform patient care duties such as taking vital signs, caring for wounds, giving injections and medications, monitoring patient progress and documenting information in patient’s charts. In many settings LPNs supervise nursing assistants or nurses aides.

Associate degree training program

One pathway to becoming a registered nurse or RN is through an associate degree program at a community college or junior college. The associate degree in nursing program generally takes about two years to complete. Courses taken include English, life sciences, Social Sciences, nursing care, pharmacology, etc. Upon completion of the degree, an individual takes the registered nurse’s licensing exam in their state.

Diploma nursing programs

Diploma programs are offered mostly by hospitals. Students choosing this option would go to school from one to two years and take courses similar to those in an associate degree program. Diploma candidates perform their clinical work at the hospital that sponsors their program. Like associate degree graduates, diploma graduates sit for the registered nursing licensing examination required by their state.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

The bachelor of science in nursing program is offered by four year colleges and universities and leads to the RN

license. Through this type of program, students take liberal arts courses, science courses like chemistry and biology, psychology, and clinical nursing courses. These programs offer candidates a wider choice of nursing courses and electives to prepare them for leadership roles in their nursing careers. Once the degree is earned, graduates sit for the licensing examination in their state. After bachelor;s prepared nurses gain a few years of experience, many move into supervisory or administrative roles.

Advanced nursing education programs

An RN who does not hold a bachelor’s degree has many options for earning one. There are numerous online and campus based programs that offer RN to BSN programs which allow associate and diploma nursing graduates to earn a bachelor’s degree within one to two years. Likewise bachelor’s degree nurses can earn master’s degrees online or on campus.

Tips for Getting into Nursing School?

While many companies in a wide variety of industries across the world have had to cut back on the amount of people they employ, other industries actually have a shortage of professionals to fill the positions that are needed. One industry that has an employment shortage is nursing. While nursing can be a great career path, getting into nursing school can be difficult. Luckily, by following a few different tips you could increase your chances of getting into nursing school. The first tip in getting into nursing school is to succeed academically. While there is a demand for nurses and getting a job could be easy, actually getting into nursing school is very competitive. To ensure that you can get into the school that you want, you should first focus on getting the best grades you possibly can in undergrad school. While in school, you should also focus your curriculum on courses that would prepare you for your future education and career. Most of the courses that you should take will be math and science based, such as biology, anatomy, chemistry, calculus, and physics, but you should also take courses, such as psychology, that would give you skills needed to deal with the mental aspect of nursing. The second tip in getting into nursing school is to get involved with a nursing organization or hospital that is located near your school. Since most colleges have onsite hospitals or clinics, you should be able to find a job doing something applicable while you are in school. Not only will this give you a source of income, but you will also receive experience in working in a medical environment, get used to reading medical files, learn terminology, but also meet people in the industry. By forming relationships with other people in the industry, you could receive multiple sources for letters of recommendation in the future. The third tip in getting into nursing school is to apply to many different nursing programs. While you may have an ideal nursing school in mind when you apply, you need to keep in mind the heavy competition that you will face from heavy applicants. To ensure that you get into a good school, be sure that you include letters of recommendation in your application, and that you apply to at least five different nursing school programs.
