First of all it was not the Germans. Germany and the Germans did not exist back then. It was the Germanic peoples. Germanic is a language group which includes German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and English. These Germanic peoples were the ancestors of the modern peoples who speak these modern languages.

During the Late Empire, the Roman army increasingly relied on enlisting Germanic mercenaries in the Roman army and getting military help from allied Germanic peoples. Germanic soldiers became a huge portion of the military forces available to Rome. These soldiers did not have a great influence on Roman society, but became vital for the defence of the empire and a powerful political factor.

Germanic military leaders became generals in the Roman army and through this, a powerful political force in the politics of the western part of the Roman Empire. So did the leaders of the allied Germanic peoples, both in the western and the eastern part of the Roman Empire.

Alaric I, the king of the allied Visigoths rebelled and devastated Greece. He rebelled again and besieged the city of Rome three times. On the last of these occasions he also sacked it.

Theodoric I, the king of the Visigoths, was a major political force in the eastern part of the Roman Empire. To get rid of him Zeno, the emperor of the eastern part of the Roman Empire, sent him to invade Italy on his behalf to depose Odoacer. Odoacer was a Germanic military commander who led a rebellion of the Germanic soldiers in Italy and overthrew Romulus Augustus, the last emperor of the western part of the Roman Empire. Theodoric I became the king of the Visigoth kingdom which comprised Italy and Illyricum (eastern Austria, western Hungary, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia).
