- Figure out how large the air filter is. The size will probably be noted on the size, appearing as 15x15x1 or a size similar to that format.
- Go to the store and buy a filter to replace the old one, and make sure it is of the same size as the old one. There is a wide variety of different kinds of filter material that you can buy for your cooling system, whether it is something on the inexpensive side, made out of spun glass filters, or it is something on the more expensive side, made out of synthetic polyester fibers.
- If you live in a dustier, warmer climate, you may want to consider getting a filter that is very efficient. High efficiency filters will do more than just capture dust particles; they will also make sure to trap mold, pollen, dust and other similar irritants from the air.
- Consider buying a hepa filter or a filter that has chemicals coated onto it so that bacteria can be killed. This is useful for families that have problems with Allergies.
- When it comes time to change the filter, use a black permanent marker. When you slide out the metal guard, you will want to take note of where the air flow is marked, according to the side of the old filter. Take the marker and draw the same arrow on the metal guard, so that the direction of the arrow is the same. Doing this will ensure there is no question about which way to insert the replacement filter.
- Discard the old air filter.
