Really, decorating these cakes is not as difficult as you may think; but it does take due care and attention to achieve the desired result. After all, the hard work has already done thus far in actually creating the cakes and the decorating part is usually the fun part. Really, it depends on what cake filling you have chosen in terms of how you should decorate the cake. For instance if you have a chocolate filling, then you could decorate the outside with chocolate piped icing, or perhaps add fresh fruit such as strawberries to the outer layers.

• If you are not familiar with using a piping bag for cake decoration, then we suggest you try other techniques of decoration. If you have a frosted cake, then there are heaps of frosted decorations you can simply add onto the layers. Or if you have a fondue cake, then lots of cheap fondue decorations can be found to put on as well.

• Whatever decorations you decide upon, whether it’s a mixture of piped icing and plastic stick-on decorations, or perhaps lacing and flowers we recommend that you practice on a board before committing it onto the wedding cake.

• Flowers and ribbons are always a good choice for decorating wedding cakes. If you choose ribbons, then simply cut the ribbons to the length of each tier, wrap it around making sure it’s nice and taught and then pin the ribbons onto the cake.

• Once all the floral, plastic and ribbon decorations have been done then it’s time for the finishing touch – the plastic miniature of a bride and groom, as no wedding cake is complete without this. If you want you can add this at the last minute, once the cake is placed on the table.

A great deal of money can be saved by decorating yourself, but it’s always best to try and find someone who has experience in bakery and/or wedding cake decoration to do it for you.
