Anyone who has not been living under a rock for the past ten years periodically hears someone complain about having to go the airport. It has almost become an accepted maxim of contemporary American society that a trip to the airport is about as much fun as undergoing a root canal. Flights are routinely delayed. People are forced to remove their shoes. Security agents see everyone naked with the use of new scanning technology. However, these minor inconveniences pale in comparison to the fun that can be experienced at the airport when one opens their mind as views the airport not as an inconvenience but as a challenge and an adventure. Airports are exciting places, buzzing with people from all over the world travelling to disparate locations for all sorts of interesting reasons. Airports are huge structures filled with all sorts of restaurants, shops, and places to sit and watch movies or read. There are tremendous opportunities to have fun.

Although some airport food can seem outrageously overpriced, there are usually some decent food options that don’t cost too much more than they normally would on the outside. A chili dog my sound like heaven, but the restaurant’s proprietor knows this and charges a premium. When spending time in an airport, comparing food prices can be a good way to entertain one’s self. California Pizza Kitchen and Baja Fresh usually offer good food for decent prices in airports. Another fun thing about airports is that they all serve Alcoholic Beverages. These can be overpriced, as well. The smartest plan of action is usually to find a Gordon Birsch or similar watering hole that offers pints of hand-crafted beers and enjoy watching a sporting event on television. The people in these places are usually very friendly, and this can put one’s self into a more pleasant frame of mind for the journey ahead.

A trip to the airport is a great metaphor for life. A person’s perception of the experience can decide whether it is a stressful and extremely annoying ordeal to be weathered or a fun diversion from everyday life.
