Hearing aids are a valuable tool that millions of people use that allow them to hear clearly again. However, like many things, hearing aids can eventually stop working. While you can probably bring your hearing aids to an audiologist to be repaired or replaced, there are certain repairs you may be able to perform on your own. Just use the following steps.

First, you will need to check the most obvious solutions. Clean the hearing aids and make sure to remove all ear wax from them. A build up of wax on a hearing aid can cause feedback. You may assume that a broken tube is causing this feedback. However, it may simply be a build up of earwax.

Make sure to be careful when you clean your hearing aids though. Use a special brush or rag that has been provided by your audiologist to do the cleaning.

Secondly, there may actually be a build up in your ears themselves that is causing the trouble. To make sure this is not the case, you may want to visit your doctor and have your ears cleaned out to remove all earwax buildup from inside them. However, do not do this yourself with a q-tip. You will risk badly damaging your ear drums.

Third, you will want to try to dry them out. A number of different hearing aids in fact come with a device that will do so over night. This should be done on occasion because moisture in a hearing aid may cause it to not function properly. Drying the hearing aid out will often solve this problem.

If that doesn't work, you should try replacing the batteries. You should be doing this about once a week regardless. Some hearing aids may also not be able to alert you of the fact the batteries are too low before the loss of power effects how they function.

One last thing you can do yourself is check to see if the case for the battery is loose. If it is loose, this could be causing the problem. If that's the case, you can take it in to be repaired. However, you also have the option of using tape to make sure the case closes properly.

How to Pick the Best Hearing Aid for You?

When you have lost some or most of your hearing, getting the right hearing aid is essential. The first step in this process is to make an appointment with an audiologist. This is the individual that will conduct your hearing screening and discuss the results with you. After the test, you and the audiologist will know how much residual hearing that you have left, and you are now ready to begin the selection process for a hearing aid. Before you go in to choose your hearing aid, write down any questions that you might have for the doctor. You also want to note the following: when you have the most trouble hearing, how well you are able to discern speech in a crowd and any other problem areas that you have noted. When you sit down to talk, the audiologist will use this information to aid in selecting an appropriate aid. You will be shown a variety of hearing aids, some that go in the ear and others that have a wrap around unit worn on the outside.Units that fit in the ear are smaller, some being able to fit out of sight completely. The wrap around model has an ear mold that fits into the ear and the receiver which wraps around behind the ear lobe. The technology now can actually adjust the volume in louder settings and adjust its own functioning to optimize hearing. Both kinds require special care and each have their own advantages and disadvantages. As you discuss the different models, ask questions about durability, ease of use and how to maintain it.It is important to remember that looks has to come second to function. The best hearing aid for you might be one that is more visible, but will be the best choice to enhance your hearing. When you have received your aid, be diligent in keeping it clean, dry and always carry extra batteries with you. If you take the time to choose the right hearing aid, you will benefit greatly.

When Is It Time to Get a Digital Hearing Aid?

So you finally decided that it was time to give in and purchase a hearing aid, but now you have no idea where to go or who to turn to when purchasing one. Don’t worry, the process of getting a hearing aid is simple if not always cost-friendly. There have been some definite breakthroughs in hearing aids over the past decade, and that is only going to benefit you. While hearing aids can certainly be expensive, how can you put a price on the ability to hear your friends and loved ones? One of the very first things that you are going to want to figure out is how much money you want to spend on your hearing aid. Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover the cost of hearing aids. Therefore, you are likely on your own. If you are part of a HSA or Health Sharing Plan, you may be able to put some of your money towards the hearing aid. Even if you think your insurance isn’t going to cover it, it is best to contact them just to make sure because some will. Now that you know how much you want to spend you want to decide what type of hearing aid you get. You will want to decide between a ‘in-the-canal’, ‘in-the-ear’, or ‘behind-the-ear’ hearing aids. I would explain further, however the names are actually pretty self explanatory in and of themselves. Finally, you are going to have to decide if you want to get an analog or a digital hearing aid. As you can imagine, the digital hearing aids are more expensive, however they have a much better quality of sound. Digital hearing aids are basically the same as analog hearing aids, except for a few key differences. A digital hearing aid actually can filter out noise and only allow the noises you want to come through come through. It gives you better volume control, a clearer sound, and also noise reduction. These key features are what make a digital hearing aid worthwhile. The bottom line is that you are going to want to find a hearing aid that fits your exact needs and your exact price. There is no use looking at high-tech hearing aid if you don’t have the coin to back it, but there are plenty of options out there to help you find hearing aid that fits you best.

Does Nick Jonas wear a hearing aid?

yes hes had bad hearing Other Answer: No...I never heard of him having "bad hearing"...on stage, he wears ear plugs because it's so loud on there. Maybe that's what you're thinking of? Other answer: Many performers wear in-ear monitors to hear their own singing and/or the sound of the music. I have never seen a Jonas Bros. concert, but if it looks like a hearing aid, that's probably what it is. Link: http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-ear_monitor
